The Statesboro Area Confederate Veterans Reunion & Parade of 1902
Copied from the Statesboro News 15 August 1902
(Courtesy of Smith C. Banks and transcribed by Jim Hall.)
We Published this week a list of the old confederate veterans, who registered their names and marched in the parade on the 17th. Mr. S. J. Williams who furnished the list, says he thinks about 25 failed to register. In all 205 are on the register, and with the 25, make 230 of them who were in line. Their ages range from 54 to 84, with an average of about sixty years. [Note: one veteran was 99 years old.]
It will be seen that five states are represented in the list to-wit: Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Flordia. Numbers came from Bryan, Screven, Tattnall, Emanuel and Effingham. They all had a pleasant time, and the News trust they will all meet again in Statesboro.

[Notes: About 40 of the veterans were members of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment.
From the ages of al the veterans it appears many of them served when they were between the ages of 14 and 16 years old. * Readers may find it useful to use our genealogy page to locate which regiments included soldiers from a particular county.]
From Smith C. Banks we also have a picture of the Bulloch veterans at their 1911 Reunion below.
And this article about the Bulloch area reunion held in Metter (now Candler County) in 1906. This photo shows the members of Bulloch County Camp #1227 of The Confederate Veterans [Also contributed by Smith C. Banks. The caption below identifies some of the people in the photo.]
This photo taken on Wednesday, July 19th, 1911, shows over 100 members of Camp #1227 of the Confederate Veterans of Bulloch County at their annual reunion at the Jaeckel Hotel in Statesboro. The Hotel still stands in Statesboro and is listed on the National Historic Register. More than 2,000 people attended the soldier’s reunion to hear speeches and share in the event. The lady in the center is Miss Inez Williams, Sponsor of Camp #1227. Some of the veterans in the photo include Elder A. W. Patterson, James Bland, Jacob Rocker, George Beasley, Remer Franklin, H.I. Waters, Sam Brack, John Turner, Jere Howard, Sam J. Williams, John A. Nevils, T. J. Whitaker, color bearer; Milenton Waters, E. W. Hodges, Alex Parrish, T. A. Waters, H.H. Bailey, Isaiah Parrish, Merida Hendrix, E.D. Holland, Jack Bowen, S.L. Moore, J.S. Hagin. This photo appeared in the July 26, 1911 issue of the Bulloch Times, but did not identify the veterans. The partial identification was made when the photo was reprinted in 1952. The home at the right is that of Dr. and Mrs. Paul Franklin Sr. (Photo courtesy of Smith C. Banks).
